The Clay County Public Health Center offers the following tips for staying cool in hot weather.

• Limit your exposure to the heat as much as possible.

• If working outdoors or in a hot environment, take frequent breaks.

• If your home does not have air conditioning, go to a public building or visit a friend who does have air conditioning for several hours a day.

• Never leave children, pets or others in closed vehicles, regardless of whether the engine is running.

• Dress for the weather by wearing loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

• If you have to be outside, use sunscreen.

• Eat cool, light meals, avoiding too much protein and fatty foods.

• Check on your neighbors, friends and relatives at least twice a day, especially those at high risk.

• Keep yourself well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water unless you’re on a water restricted diet. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

• If you believe someone is experiencing a heat emergency, don’t hesitate to call 911.
