Area bicycle and pedestrian advocates and groups have been working since the 1990s to create the first safe, accessible bicycle/pedestrian crossing of the Missouri River near downtown Kansas City.
Those efforts are paying off today as the Missouri Department of Transportation holds a public meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. at MARC headquarters, 600 Broadway, to outline the proposed addition of a barrier-separated bicycle-pedestrian path to the Heart of America Bridge, connecting downtown Kansas City with North Kansas City. "Over 150,000 people live, work, or stay in the 7.5 square miles immediately surrounding the Heart of America Bridge," said Missouri Bicycle Federation Executive Director Brent Hugh. "That is the highest population density anywhere in our region — and that means the place where the most bicycling and walking happens. "Already some hundreds of people walk and bicycle across the Missouri River Bridges in the area daily, and it really is high time we created a safe crossing for them." No Missouri River bridge currently provides a safe way for people on foot and bicycle to cross, and these bridges have been the scene of a number of bicycle and pedestrian fatalities in recent years, Huge said.
