Almost two months after former Ward 2 Alderman David McCoy died, Parkville’s Board of Aldermen voted to approve an interim replacement Monday, Oct. 12, during a special meeting at 6:45 p.m. at City Hall. Scott McRuer, managing director of McRuer CPAs in Briarcliff, was named the interim replacement. McRuer will hold the seat until the next elections in April 2010, and he began serving immediately, participating in the regular board meeting after the special meeting at 7 p.m. Gerry Richardson, mayor of Parkville, said he recommended McRuer to the board because of his extensive financial background in accounting and because of his involvement in the city. "I was looking for someone with involvement in the community over the last several years, and if you look at his bio, it’s a long list of community and civic activities over the past several years," he said. "He knows a lot of people in the community, and they know him, so he’ll be an excellent representative. Also, his professional and technical skills will be of benefit to the board, and he’s a good guy." McRuer, whose office used to sit on Missouri Highway 9 in Parkville where the School of Rock now resides, is a longtime resident of Parkville. Although he never sought a position on the board, McRuer said he’s ready to try to fill McCoy’s shoes. "Dave was a very skilled and experienced alderman, so following in his footsteps is a big job," he said. "I’m not sure I’ll be as effective as he was, but I’ll do my best." While McRuer said he hopes to use his background to offer financial assistance to the board, he also wants to try to pick up where McCoy left off at the nature sanctuary, also a passion of his. Although this is McRuer’s first stint as an alderman, he has plenty of political experience — McRuer serves on the Platte County Board of Zoning Adjustment, and he is also the chairman of the Park Hill School District Education Foundation and a former chair of the Platte County Economic Development Council. McRuer will serve as a Ward 2 alderman for about six months and he said he’s not sure if he’ll seek re-election when the time comes. "We’ll see how well I do for the citizens of Parkville and how much I can do with this opportunity," he said. "I feel like I can contribute. This is great town and a fun place to live."
