The Gladstone City Council was given an update at the Monday, Jan. 11, meeting on the status of five future road projects that are expected to see some progress in 2010.

Interim Public Works Director Tim Nebergall said evaluations are underway to determine funding options for the five projects. The list totals approximately $9 million of road updates the city expects to get started on this year.

According to Nebergall, here are the proposed projects:

North Broadway Avenue

North Broadway Avenue from Northwest 76th Street to approximately 250 feet north of the city limits into Kansas City North will get new curb and gutter, and sidewalks on one side of the street and share-the-road bicycle lanes. The road will also be raised to solve stormwater drainage problems in the area.

According to a memo from Nebergall, the design of the project is complete, and right-of-way acquisition will begin once a funding source has been established.

He said Kansas City has verbally committed $100,000 to fund the 250 feet of improvements that will extend beyond the Gladstone city limits.

The construction cost estimate for the project is approximately $900,000.

Old Pike Road

Old Pike Road from Northwest 52nd Terrace to Northwest 54th Terrace will get new curb and gutter, and sidewalks on both sides of the street and share-the-road bicycle lanes.

Like the North Broadway project, design of the improvements is complete, and right-of-way acquisition will begin when funding has been identified.

The construction cost estimate for the project is approximately $1.3 million.

Northeast 76th Street

Northeast 76th Street from North Olive Street to approximately 250 feet north of the city limits into Kansas City North will get new curb and gutter, sidewalks on one side of the street and share-the-road bicycle lanes. The roadway will also be raised several feet to solve drainage problems.

Nebergall said the city is working with Kansas City on this project, too, to aid in funding the portion of the project that extends beyond Gladstone.

The construction cost estimate is approximately $1.7 million.

North Oak Trafficway

Turn lane improvements will be made on North Oak Trafficway at Northeast 76th Street.

City staff is finalizing the design of the improvements, and the project has been expanded to include a center turn lane to the north city limits. Right-of-way acquisition is under way. Nebergall said the project will significantly decongest the area.

The construction cost estimate is approximately $600,000.

Pleasant Valley Road

Negotiation for the acquisition of right-of-way is under way for a project to realign Pleasant Valley Road from approximately North Jackson Street on the east to North Antioch Road on the west.

Gladstone and Kansas City jointly funded an alignment study of the road.

The construction cost estimate is approximately $4.5 million.
