Park Hill School District administrators presented plans for a 10th elementary school during a Board of Education meeting Thursday, Feb. 4.
The new school, not yet approved by the school board, would be paid for with a no-tax-increase bond, which likely would appear on the April 2011 ballot, according to Chief Financial Officer Paul Kelly. The school would open in the fall of 2012. The proposed building would be about 65,000 square feet and cost about $10 million, Kelly estimated. The bond would include extra money for additional capital projects needed across the school district, Kelly said. The administration’s recommendation was driven primarily by the need for more space. On Jan. 28, the school board learned that most of its elementary schools are already overcrowded. In addition, about 15,000 square feet of the current elementary buildings are in portable units that are old and need to be replaced, Kelly said. Attendance boundaries for all of the district’s elementary schools will be redrawn to equalize student enrollment under Kelly’s plan. This process would coincide with the opening of the new school.
